What is changing in the 2027 BACB fieldwork requirements?

Four things change for fieldwork. The hour totals don’t.

The 2027 BACB fieldwork requirements keep the 2,000-hour standard pathway and the 1,500-hour concentrated pathway exactly as they are. What changes is how you log and supervise those hours. Per the BACB’s 2027 transition guidance, the monthly hour cap rises from 130 to 160, observation requirements switch from a per-month count to a per-month duration, and concentrated supervision drops from 10% to 7.5%.

The big conceptual shift is observation. A duration-based observation rule means your supervisor has to watch you work with a client for a set number of minutes each month, not just check a box saying it happened.

Who is affected by the 2027 changes?

Anyone who applies for BCBA certification on or after January 1, 2027.

If you submit your application and meet all current requirements before that date, you stay on the 2022 standards. If you don’t, you must meet the 2027 standards, full stop. There’s no partial credit and no automatic grandfathering of hours just because you logged them under the old rules. The BACB is explicit: all supervised fieldwork must meet the requirements in place at the time you submit your application.

There’s also a pathway change. Starting in 2027, only two eligibility routes survive: Pathway 1 (a degree from an APBA- or ABAI-accredited or recognized program) and Pathway 2 (behavior-analytic coursework). The BACB retires Pathways 3 and 4. If you planned to apply under Pathway 3 or 4, you must apply and meet every requirement before January 1, 2027.

Do my current fieldwork hours still count in 2027?

Yes, if they meet the 2027 standards. Maybe not, if they only met the old ones.

Hours don’t expire because of the rule change. They expire on the BACB’s normal clock: you must accrue all qualifying hours within five years. The risk isn’t the calendar. It’s the criteria. Hours logged under 2022 observation rules may or may not satisfy the 2027 duration rule, because counting “one observation” isn’t the same as logging “60 minutes of observation.”

One trap worth naming: you can’t count concentrated hours accrued at the 2027 rate of 7.5% supervision as concentrated under the 2022 rules, which demand 10%. It works the other way around, though. Concentrated hours logged at the old 10% rate meet or exceed the 7.5% threshold, so they carry forward fine. If you’re unsure which way you’ll apply, log to the stricter of the two on every metric.

When do the new requirements take effect?

January 1, 2027. There’s no phase-in and no grace period.

You must also earn your hours within a five-year window, and the BACB requires you and your supervisor to retain all fieldwork documentation for at least seven years. The exam is unaffected: it has run on the BCBA Test Content Outline (6th edition) since January 1, 2025, and the BACB has confirmed that no exam changes accompany the 2027 requirement update.

How should candidates and supervisors prepare now?

Plan to meet both rulebooks at once until you know your application date.

2. Log to the stricter standard. Keep monthly hours at or under 130 if there’s any chance you apply under 2022 rules. Track observation in minutes, not just as a count, so you satisfy the 2027 duration rule automatically.
3. Keep both form sets. Complete the 2022 and 2027 Monthly Fieldwork Verification Forms with your supervisor each month if your date is uncertain.
4. Watch the concentrated supervision gap. If you want the option to apply either way, hit 10% supervision on concentrated months, not 7.5%.
5. Retain everything for seven years. Contracts, M-FVFs, observation logs, all of it.

Are the 2,000 and 1,500 hour totals changing in 2027? No. Both totals stay the same. Only the monthly cap, observation rule, and concentrated supervision percentage change.
