Staying in ABA When You’ve Thought About Leaving
I’ve talked to a lot of people who’ve considered stepping away from the field at some point. The reasons vary, burnout, pay, workload, or just needing a change. Yet many of us are still here. I’m curious what made the difference for others.
What kept you in ABA when you were close to leaving? Or what made you come back?
Hi! I have actually left the field and returned. I took ~1 year break and worked in a totally unrelated field. The reason for leaving was burnout (40 hr weeks as RBT + fieldwork hours and school, immediately into a BCBA/running a clinic) and concerns about unethical practices. At this time a lot of autistic voices were raising concerns of some ABA practices as well. I returned when I interviewed companies and found one that practiced assent, client led sessions, and other great practices. I’m still there and I’m glad I returned. 🙂
That really resonates. Taking a full step away and coming back with clearer boundaries and values makes a lot of sense, especially after that kind of workload. Burnout plus ethical concerns is such a common combo in this field, but people do not always talk about it openly.
I really appreciate you sharing that!
I think there are more options in ABA than teaching. I happen to have done both. I also think the flexibility of ABA is more beneficial as a business owner.
Do you have your own practise?
I opened an LLC, but I am still in school and am waiting to do anything with it.
